3. Funktionen und Strukturen

"The most widely accepted view is that hedging is the process whereby authors tone down their statements in order to reduce the risk of opposition and minimize the 'threat-to-face' that lurks behind every act of communication." (Salager-Meyer 1995:128-129)

 

Funktionen:

- Hedging reduziert die Verantwortung des Sprechers/Schreibers für den Wahrheitsgehalt einer Aussage

- Hedging modifiziert die Gültigkeit einer Aussage oder die Gewichtigkeit der gegebenen Information

- Hedging signalisiert die Einstellung des Sprechers/Schreibers zur Proposition bzw. kann seine Haltung verschleiern

- Hedging schützt den Sprecher/Schreiber vor Kritik und reduziert die Gefahr der Ablehnung durch den Rezipienten(Markkanen/Schröder 1997)

 

Typen:

His feet were sort of blue. => approximator
I think his feet were blue. => shield
It is a bit cold in here. => understatement
It is snowing in the mountains, I suppose. => hedge
- simple hedges
- compound hedges
- triple-hedged range

intensifiers (definitely, rather, indeed)
approximators (roughly, some, virtually, approximately)
impersonalizations (the modern view is ... A contrasting view is ... According to this view ...)
indicators of personal involvement (We wish to suggest ... As best we can tell...)
