When most historians think about images, they tend to see only illustrations for the arguments they have already derived from the documents in the archives. Few consider images to be sources in their own right which require their own specific modes of analysis and interpretation. Yet images exert an enormous influence on how we understand the past as well as the present. How does visual evidence from the past influence our perceptions and understandings of the European nineteenth and twentieth centuries? And how did Europeans’ visual experiences in the past shape their understandings of their societies, politics and cultures? In this course, we will investigate both of these questions by examining the theory and practice of the production and reception of visual objects and spaces in nineteenth and twentieth century Western Europe and Russia.
