Introduction to Europeanization
Europeanization became since 1990’s an increasingly important research area in European integration studies. Scholars of European integrationhave placed emphasis on the supranational structures and their policy competence, as well as on the transfer of authority and decision-makingcapacity from the national to supranational level. Europeanization studies bring instead into focus a yet unexplored dimension: the domesticlevel, the impact of the EU on its member states, accession states and near-neighbours. The seminar gives an introduction to the development ofthis research agenda. We will attempt to both construct and deconstruct the term. We approach Europeanization from different perspectives reflecting critically on itslimitations as a framework for understanding the changing European political landscape.Firstly we will discuss Europeanization as a stage in integration theory: from the uniting of Europe to the institutionalized Europe and thetransforming Europe, tracking down the evolution of Europeanization as a concept. We will subsequently question the possibility of having adifferential impact within Europe, and thus different patterns of Europeanization. Is there an Europeanization East different from anEuropeanization North? Is the impact on the member states different as their institutional structure is different? Is EU’s impact limited toEuropean states and their near-neighbours? The seminar will conclude by analysing the Europeanization in terms of outcomes and goalachievements.Literatur: Wird bei der Einführungsveranstaltung bekanntgegeben.
