The crisis of representative democracy and the European promise
Montag, 11.15 - 12.45 Uhr
Veranstaltungsbeginn: 13.10.2014
Raum: Logenhaus (LH) 120
The crisis of representative democracy and the European promise Representative democracy is in crisis. There are many reasons: economic globalisation and the domestic pressure to reform social systems towards more efficiency; the internet and new concepts of liquid democracy and electronic representation; the marginalisation of national parliaments and the growing importance of governments; and, last but not least, the growing social fragmentation and its implication of political resignation in many parts of modern societies. The class will undertake in its first part a review of recent contributions to the analysis of the crisis of democracy. In its second part, we will analyse whether and in how far the European integration process promises a convincing way out of the crisis and a revitalization of the promise of representative democracy.
