PFC-Project "Ethics and Climate Change": Description and Development
The problem of climate change is noticeable in many ways. For in addition to obvious factors, such as changing ecological and meteorological parameters, climate change also manifests itself through a strengthening of inequality dynamics, which are already being felt today, especially in the global South. So what ethical challenges do we face when thinking about climate change? How can we think about issues like racism, classism, feminism, and climate change together? And most importantly, how can we didactically address the issue of 'climate change and ethics'? The project 'Climate Change and Ethics. Games as a medium of reflection' wants to approach these questions by developing one or more (virtual) games (e.g. card games). After all, games are not merely involved in the active (co-)design of cultural processes. They also enable us to deal with the limits of our own thinking.
In order to stimulate reflection on climate change and pave the way towards a sustainable, just Europe, the project therefore pursues the goal of developing a low-threshold offering that promotes reflection and discussion and is not exclusively limited to the university context.
Currently, the students who participated in this year's Utopia Europe competition are working on the implementation and publication of the three game ideas that were developed as part of the project work.
Schedule of the project in 2022
Competition held in the French Embassy - 22nd June 2022
The team that represented the Viadrina University in 2022 was composed of students studying at the Viadrina University and the Univeresity Panthéon-Sorbonne. Their idea was to develop several card games that combine questions related to the topic of climate change with ethical reflexions. The project was therefore presented under the title: "Climate Change and Ethics. Games as media of reflection" / "Klimawandel und Ethik. Spiele als Reflexionsmedium".
