Lecture and Seminar, Prof. Dr. Michael Kimmel
In the lecture, we will discuss the place of sports in general, and soccer in particular, within the field of masculinity studies, situating sports, and especially spports talk as a specifically gendered activity. We will disucss the ways in which race works in sports talk, and also the way that racial discrimination in sports is gendered, i.e. how it problematizes the masculinity of the "other." We will talk about the effects of homophobia, ad the partial decline of homophobia on men's sports behavior.
