GAL Conference 2015

Workshop

“Making Language Barrier-Free 2”

Barrier-free communication is being researched in both the translation studies and computer linguistics fields. At this workshop on September 25th 2015, experts from both research areas will discuss the following topics, among others:

  • Where do the points of contact lie between translation studies and computer linguistics in the context of barrier-free communication research? What other forms of communication, apart from barrier-free communication, rely on highly regulated interventions?
  • How could translation studies and computer linguistics profit from one another in the barrier-free research field as well as other controlled forms of communication?
  • Developments in barrier-free communication often stem from experience and are then later theoretically examined and verified. What types of problems stem from this approach? Controlled, technical communication on the other hand, is often developed by experts. What could both areas learn from each other?
  • How could academics from the translation studies and computer linguistics fields support practitioners from various areas of controlled communication early on in their development of methods and tools?
  • How does the choice regarding the methods and technology in the development of controlled communication products influence the content and quality of the end product?

In addition to the lectures, there will be enough time for a thorough discussion.

This session is being carried out in cooperation with the Association for Applied Linguistics (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik (PTLS). Contributions from Poland are highly desired.

30-minute presentations followed by a 15-minute discussion are desired.
