Apl. Prof. Dr. habil. Gert-Rüdiger Wegmarshaus

Gert-Rüdiger Wegmarshaus is a trained philosopher and political scientist:
  • Dr. phil. (PhD) in Philosophy and History of Science: Academy of Sciences, Berlin 1987;
  • Habilitation in Political Science: EUV, Frankfurt (Oder) 1999;
  • Professor (Extra-Ordinary) of Political Science: EUV, Frankfurt (Oder) 2006.

During his professional career Dr. Gert Rüdiger Wegmarshaus has been working at a range of academic institutions: At the Institute for Theory and History of Science of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin until 1991, at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), Washington DC and at the School of Social Sciences at the University of California, Irvine in 1992. Later on he has been affiliated with the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences at the European-University Viadrina, Frankfurt (Oder): From 1993–1996 he had been active as researcher and lecturer at the Chair: Comparative Analysis of Political Systems, Movements, and Cultures; the Chair holder during that time was Prof. Hans Weiler, the first Rector of the European-University Viadrina.

From 1997 to 1999 Gert Rüdiger Wegmarshaus was awarded with a research fellowship for academic advancement (Stipend for Habilitation), in 1999 he got his Habilitation in Political Science and was promoted to the position of affiliated Associate Professor (Private-Docent). From 2000 onwards Wegmarshaus pursued different research projects being at the same time busy with teaching and tutoring at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels.

In 2006 the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences of the EUV promoted him to Professor (Extraordinary) of Political Science. For three years, from 2006 to 2008 Gert Wegmarshausas appointed to the position of Academic Director of EuroCollege at the University of Tartu in Estonia. He returned to Viadrina at the Invitation of the Chair-holder Prof. Minkenberg and the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences for serving as Acting Chair at the Professorship Political Science 1: Comparative Analysis of Political Systems, Movements, and Cultures.


Gert Rüdiger Wegmarshaus is conducting research in three different, albeit interconnected fields:
  1. Political Theory, History of Political Ideas, Theory of Democracy and Democratisation with particular interest in Liberal, Deliberative, and Participative Models of Democracy.
  2. Political and Societal Transformation of Post-Communist Countries in Eastern and Central-Eastern Europe with particular interest in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
  3. Policy-Studies in the field of energy supply and energy security in the European Union and its Eastern Neighbourhood countries with particular interest in energy policy relation between the EU and Russia.


Wegmarshaus’ activities in academic teaching both at the Undergraduate and the Graduate levels are covering the following areas:
  1. Political Theory and History of Political Ideas from Early Modernity to Present Time.
  2. Comparative Government of Western Democracies as well as of new Democracies in Central and Eastern Europe.
  3. International Relations and Foreign Policy with special regard to EU and to Russia.
  4. Policy Analysis in the fields of Science, Research, Technology, and Energy.


Apl. Prof. Dr. Gert Rüdiger Wegmarshausis actively engaged in supervision of both graduation theses (Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts), and of doctoral dissertations.
