Europe as a foreign policy actor: The case of the Iran nuclear negotiations

 A quarter century after the introduction of a Common Foreign and Security Policy, the EU still grapples with an autonomous global role. Between dominating world powers and the desire of its member states to retain of of the last domains of their national sovereignty, there is not much room for what has come to be called European foreign policy. Still, the EU’s approach to Iran has emerged as one of the few successes in this field. Yet its role in international negotiations from 2003, as much as its broader approach to Iran, are generally poorly appreciated by policy-makers in Europe, the United States, and around the world.

This course introduces students to the field of European foreign policy by using the Iran nuclear file as a case study. Building on theoretical approaches to international relations, it sets out a framework to analyse the EU’s actorness in global affairs. It examines both the complexity of EU policy-making and Iran’s (aspired) place in the international order. Students will discuss not only the importance of transatlantic relations but also that multilateral bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Security Council as important backdrops to the year-long negotiations that led to the conclusion of the Iran Nuclear Agreement (formally known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA) in 2015. Finally, the course offers insights on current affairs, as a policy shift in the United States as well as an increasingly conflict-ridden Middle East have left the agreement vulnerable. After helping to craft the deal, the Europeans are now asked to preserve it against all odds.

Journalismus –eine praktische Einführung

Blockseminar: PF Block, Ort: AM 02
Journalisten üben in einer Demokratie eine zentrale Funktion aus: Öffentlichkeit schaffen, politisches Handeln für Bürgerinnen und Bürger transparent machen und kritisch begleiten. Im Seminar hinterfragen wir kritisch, welche Medien wir wann konsumieren und wo wir uns informieren. Gemeinsam erarbeiten wir praktische Grundlagen des Journalismus und beschäftigen uns mit verschiedenen journalistischen Darstellungsformen. In praktischen Übungen lernen die Teilnehmer, eine Nachricht, einen Kommentar oder eine Reportage zu schreiben und ein Interview zu führen. Je komplexer unsere Welt wird, umso höher werden auch die Anforderungen an diejenigen, die journalistisch tätig sind. Welche Bedeutung haben Fake News und Hate Speech? Wie beeinflussen sie die journalistische Arbeit? Wir diskutieren über Beispiele aus der Praxis. Welche Rolle spielen die sozialen Medien? Wie sehr verändern sie journalistische Arbeit und beeinflussen die Bürgerinnen und Bürger – zum Beispiel im Bundestagswahlkampf? Welche ethischen Standards gelten für Journalisten und wie werden diese sichergestellt? Die Pressefreiheit ist ein hohes Gut. Aktuelle Beispiele zeigen Einschränkungen für Journalisten in Europa. Im Seminar besprechen wir, wie unterschiedlich die Bedingungen auch innerhalb Europas sind. Das Seminar richtet sich an alle Journalismus-Interessierten. Erste Vorerfahrungen sind von Vorteil, aber kein Muss.

- 3 ECTS für: -Zwei Fact Sheets à zwei Seiten zu Bedeutung von Journalismus in einer Demokratie und Fake News (in Anlehnung an Online-Module, mitbringen beim Blockseminar) ODER-Einen Kommentar schreiben und ein Interview führen, jeweils max. 2 Seiten-Artikel (Print oder Online) mitbringen zum Seminar, der in letzter Zeit in Erinnerung geblieben ist
