The Politics of International Intervention: Professionals and Statebuilding

Montag, 14-täglich, 16.15-19.45 Uhr

In this course we will examine efforts of external actors aimed at building stable and democratic states across the world. In particular, we will focus on international and local professionals working in such spheres as development and peacebuilding. In the first part of the course, we will discuss historical debates and theoretical frameworks. Second, we will study how the everyday work of professionals looks like and what effects their modes of operation have on societies. The basis for an in-depth study will provide cases of EU missions in Southeastern and Eastern Europe.


Russian Foreign Policy

This course examines contemporary issues in Russian foreign policy from historical, intellectual and theoretical perspectives. We will thus first review major debates inside Russia that shape(d) its foreign and security policies towards the West and the former Soviet space. We will also explore domestic and external factors that influence Russia’s foreign policy priorities. The  selected case studies include, among others, NATO and the Kosovo war, EU- Russian relations as well as Russia’s role in the  Shanghai Cooperation Organization. To gain a deeper understanding of the issues discussed during the class, the seminar  includes a simulation game. By the end of this course students will learn to synthesize and critically evaluate competing arguments and policy ideas.

Russian Politics and Society

The aim of this course is to explore political processes in contemporary Russia. In particular, it will investigate such topics  as informal governance, relationships between state and society, agents and practices of political rule as well as connections between domestic and foreign policies. A special focus is placed on the implications for policy making. By the end of this course, students will not only become acquainted with useful concepts for studying Russian politics and  society, but will also learn to critically scrutinize scholarly attempts by situating them in a broader theoretical context.
