The Master in European Studies (MES) is a multilingual, interdisciplinary Master's programme (M.A.) at the three faculties of the European University Viadrina, Frankfurt (Oder).

In four central areas - culture, politics, law and economics - MES courses are offered by the various faculties. At the European University Viadrina you will find many research areas in these fields, which you can focus on according to your interests. You have the opportunity to build your individual MES profile and set your own focal points. You develop your profile through your central area, the decision for two elective areas, the topic of your final thesis and practical experience. Depending on your inclination, the degree programme thus has a stronger disciplinary or interdisciplinary orientation.

The programme enables students to develop a critical and interdisciplinary view of cultural, political, economic and legal developments in Europe and the EU. The problems of coexistence in a growing Europe are analysed and one acquires the competence to contribute to their solution. The research-oriented Master's programme teaches subject-specific methodologies in all four subject areas. The main research areas offered are Governance in Europe; European Economic Law; Migration, Ethnicity, Ethnocentrism; City, Region and Border in Europe; Culture, History and Society in Europe; and Economic Policy in Europe, which you can expand upon in the elective areas. Examples of topics that our students have worked on in their Master's thesis can be found here.

The courses in the MES are predominantly held in German, but also in English, French and Polish. The acquisition of a modern European foreign language is part of the study programme. Language enthusiasts in particular have the option to acquire a multilingual certificate. To strengthen your international profile, you can take advantage of exchange programmes with over 200 partner universities in more than 40 countries. In addition, you have the opportunity to apply for one of our three double master's programmes:

1. for the German-Polish programme with Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza in Poznań in the field of political science,

2. for the double Master's programme with Istanbul BILGI University, as well as

3. for the double programme with Sciences Po Strasbourg.

MES graduates find their career opportunities in NGOs, in national and international educational institutions and foundations as well as cultural institutions, in political institutions, in European and international companies, in the field of political education, in political consulting and at the intersections of business and politics.

We offer intensive support, small seminar groups and excellent technical equipment. In addition to the sports and recreational facilities in Frankfurt and the surrounding area, you can also take advantage of the many opportunities in nearby Berlin.
