Jahreskonferenz „History of Science and the Challenges of ‘Non-simultaneity‘ in Eastern and Central Europe“

Annual conference "History of Science and the Challenges of 'Non-simultaneity' in Eastern and Central Europe"

The annual conference of the research network project "European Times" took place from 1 to 3 December 2021. Under the theme "History of Science and the Challenges of 'Non-simultaneity' in Eastern and Central Europe", scholars from various disciplines discussed complex interconnections of knowledge production in "East" and "West", focusing in particular on manifestations of non-simultaneity. The discussions concentrated on the category of "theories from the East" and the ways in which "Western" conceptual frameworks have been domesticated in Central and Eastern Europe.

The three panels of the conference focused on the development of the history of ideas with regard to phenomena of non-simultaneity, literary criticism in Soviet Ukraine in the 1920s and early 1930s, and the complexity of scholarly interactions during the Cold War Period.

The conference was hold online in English and started on 1 December, 14.00 h, with the opening lecture by Annette Werberger on "Asynchronicities in Cultural and Literary Studies". Please click here for further information about the program.

The conference was conceived, chaired and organised by Prof. Dr. Andrii Portnov, who holds the Chair of Entangeld History of Ukraine at the European University Viadrina and represents the research field History of Science within the EUTIM project.

The research network project "European Times" deals with the narratives of time and space at the edges of Europe. Based on the experiences in the societies of Central and Eastern Europe, concepts such as "old"/"new" and "East"/"West" are analysed with their temporal demarcations and localisations. Cultural phenomena of non-simultaneity are examined with regard to dynamics of de-Europeanisation and Europeanisation.
