Justice as a Linguistic Matter

Video em Portugûes

The study of non-standard dialects is a part of the history of a language but also involves their capacity to express complex ideas and strong emotions. The quantitative analysis of linguistic structure can correct unjust views of linguistic limitations as well as fundamental matters of linguistic identity. The presentation will examine the contention of educational psychologists that African-American English lacks the logical structure necessary for the acquisition of Standard written English and the use of linguistic arguments to reject this position in federal court.

A percepção sociolinguística do soar Gay
Social Linguistics. Making Social Sense of the Discipline of Linguistics in Multilingual Africa Social Linguistics is defined as the study of languaging, with primary account to the social life of the people whose languaging experience is the object of scientific focus. Why such pragmatic move if science is thought to operate context-free, and if scientific thruth owes its validity from abstractness and universality? The answer is that, while scientific thruth holds independently of time and space, incentives for seeking such truth are always historically, politically, geographically an socially motivated. Scientific research cannot do without funding provided by interest stakeholders be they individuals, private or public institutions; thus the inevitable bias of scientific agenda.

Sociolinguistic Variation and the Public Interest

Although the disparity between sociolinguistic knowledge and popular beliefs about language diversity is well documented, little proactive attention has been given to changing public misconceptions. How can programs about linguistic diversity be presented when the prevailing public language ideology is largely fueled by the principle of linguistic subordination? This presentation offers a theoretical and methodological approach to public education on language diversity. The approach to dialect awareness presented here is based on the underlying assumption that the public is inherently curious about language differences and that this intrigue can be transformed into public education venues that range from public television documentaries to formal educational curricula. It connects the legacy of language variation to legitimate historical and cultural themes that are intrinsically interesting to the public, and assumes that the most effective and permanent education takes place when learners discover truths for themselves.
