The Seminar Race and racism: historical trajectories, conceptual approaches, and recent developments centres on the analysis of the category of race and the sociopolitical phenomenon of racism. The aim of the seminar is to provided an understanding of race and racism aware of historical and geographical contexts, as well as to critically engage with different conceptual and theoretical approached analysing race and racism. The Seminar begins with the problematic question on the origins of racism and the interlocking operations of the categories race and religion to then move to significant conceptual contributions to the field of study of race and racism by interrogating the racial contract, the racial state, and everyday racism. Afterward, the seminar engages with the intersections between gender, sexuality, and race, as well as with three empirical manifestations of racism, namely, antisemitism, Islamophobia and anti-Black racism. Finally the seminar will focus on the post racial condition as well as with recent racial formations developments in medicine and genomic research.

Leistungsnachweis:
3 ECTS: regelmäßige aktive Mitarbeit, Übernahme eines Referats, 6 ECTS: wie für 3, zusätzlich Hausarbeit von 12 Seiten Gesamtumfang, 9 ECTS: wie für 3, zusätzlich Hausarbeit von 25 Seiten.

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen:
Regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme, Bereitschaft zum Lesen englischsprachiger Texte.
