Feminism, Sexism, Terrorism: Analysing the Roles of Women and Gender-Issues Within ISIS and Beyond

6/9 ECTS

Seminar: Vergleichende Sozialwissenschaften: Vertiefung

Mi, 11:15 - 12:45 Uhr, online, Veranstaltungsbeginn: 04.11.2020, KUL-12378

“A woman did what?!”
“Are you sure a woman was capable of doing that?!”
Women tend to be ascribed certain roles when it comes to various sectors within international politics – including violence and terrorism. Oftentimes they are described as the more peaceful, emotional, weaker and dependent sex. Women as active agents in the spheres of violence and terrorism seem to particularly boggle our minds as they do not fit in the conventional perception of “appropriate” female behaviour. Since gender is socially constructed, so are the traits we associate with what is considered “feminine” or “masculine”. In this seminar we will critically examine gendered notions in the spheres of international politics, international security and violence through a feminist theoretical lens. The seminar will intertwine feminist theories to practical case-studies which exemplify how we view women’s roles within various sectors of international politics, including in violent terrorist organizations such as ISIS.
