What role does gender play in global politics and security? How do masculinities impact militarism and war? Why are women considered to be more peaceful than men? When women participate in terrorism, why is it assumed that they are manipulated and join for emotional rather than rational reasons? This seminar will seek to provide answers to those questions by looking at issues regarding international conflicts, peace, war and political violence through a gender lens. The aim is to expose the workings of power and hierarchies embedded in gendered dynamics of international politics and security. Our knowledge on such matters will be deepened by taking case studies into account of men and women involved in war crimes, the military, terrorism and in armed groups. Students will thus become familiar with questions, methods, terms and issues grounded in Feminist International Relations. Please note that the seminar will be held from October 2021 to December 2021 in double-sessions (= 2 x 90 minutes per day) in Frankfurt (Oder).
