Beyond authoritarianism: the roots of right-wing violence in East Germany
.
Where does right-wing violence in the East come from? Since the 1990s, it has been said that it is a consequence of internalised authoritarian GDR structures. Stefan Wellgraf, on the other hand, focuses on rebellious GDR youths who came into conflict with the state because of their anti-authoritarian tendencies and turned to right-wing subcultures in protest. Based on several years of field research and archive research, he examines how resentment against state elites in East Germany arose and became entrenched after reunification, thus preparing the ground for right-wing populism.
Stefan Wellgraf, born in East Berlin in 1979, studied cultural and social sciences in Berlin, Frankfurt (Oder) and Paris. Subsequent stays at New York University, the Johann-Jacobs-Museum in Zurich and the University of Hamburg, among others. Since 2021 Heisenberg position at the Institute for European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and head of a BMBF project on transformations of right-wing violence in East Germany at the Institute for Social Sciences. Latest book publications: "Rechtspopulismen der Gegenwart. Kulturwissenschaftliche Irritationen" (ed. with Christine Hentschel, 2023) and "Ausgrenzungsapparat Schule.Wie unser Bildungssystem soziale Spaltungen verschärft" (2021).
