Alan Duben ist Professor am Department für Soziologie an der Bilgi Universität. Er studierte Geschichtswissenschaft/ Sozialwissenschaften sowie Sozialanthropologie unter anderem an der University of Chicago, an der auch in Sozialanthropologie promovierte.

Er bekleidete Positionen in den USA und der Türkei – seit 1999 ist er Professor an der Bilgi Universität. Sein besonderes Forschungsinteresse gilt der Struktur und dem Wandel familialer Beziehungen und Haushalte in der Türkei, insbesondere in Istanbul.
