Citizenship is traditionally understood as a set of relationships between the individual and the state apparatus that involves a legal status, rights and duties, political participation and identity.  However, globalisation and its partner in crime, increasing cultural diversity within nation-states, now challenge the pillars of modern citizenship. This course aims to familiarize students with key notions of citizenship politics, including the empirical challenges it faces in the age of migration. While the first part of the course will offer an introduction to fundamental concepts of citizenship, the second part will be based on case-studies of a variety of countries in Western Europe and will more closely engage with citizenship policies and its implications for migrants. On the whole, students will gain a broad understanding of the conceptual and empirical issues surrounding citizenship politics in Europe today. The course intends to provide a mutual learning environment, therefore students are expected to actively participate and present their research papers in class.
