Lehrveranstaltungen Sommersemester 2019:

Symbols of 20th Century Fascism and Communism

6 ECTS
Seminar: Zentralbereich Kultur / WPM 2: Europäisches Wirtschaftsrecht / WPM 5: Kultur, Geschichte & Gesellschaft in Europa
Block Ort: GD 312, Veranstaltungsbeginn: 17.06.2019

Our goal is a broad, comparative view of far-right and far-left European political symbols of the 20th century that still exist today, and their legacies. We will employ a theoretical framework addressing symbolic indexicality and measurements of political efficacy, in general terms; and move toward case-study-based historical and ethnographic discussions of fascist and Communist builtenvironment vestiges, focusing on whether and how symbols have (or not) retained a level of political ‘charge’ until today. How much do these symbols matter today – and under what circumstances, to whom? How much will they matter in the future?
